‘Glass’ Revives Box Office With Top 3 All-Time Mlk Weekend Opening
Though it isn’t looking like it will have the opening weekend analysts expected, Universal’s “Glass” is still doing its job of reviving the box office as it moves out of the holiday season. M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film made $16 million on Friday, and is currently projected for a 4-day total of $48 million from 3,841 screens on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.

While that’s below the $50 million projections set by Universal and well below the $52-65 million projection set by trackers, “Glass” is still on course to post one of the top three highest Mlk weekend openings in box office history. The all-time best opening is the $107.2 million set in 2015 by “American Sniper,” an outlier as that film went on to gross $350 million domestic. No. 2 on the list belongs to Universal’s “Ride Along,” which had a 4-day opening of $48.6 million in 2015.

The other good bit of news is that opening night audiences didn’t quite reject “Glass” as much as some critics predicted. While the film has a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 35 percent, audiences gave the film a B on CinemaScore. By comparison, Shyamalan’s last film, “Split,” had a 76 percent Rt score and a B+ on CinemaScore. With little competition in the next three weeks, “Glass” will have a chance to leg out into February having already made back its $20 million production budget.

In second place this weekend is Stx’s “The Upside,” which is holding remarkably well and is now poised to join the “Bad Moms” films as one of Stx’s highest grossing films ever. The film added $4.1 million on its second Friday and is expected to drop just 28 percent from its $20.5 million opening with a $14.7 million 3-day/$17.7 4-day weekend total. That would push its domestic cume to $46 million.

In third is WB’s “Aquaman,” which will cross the $300 million domestic mark in its fifth weekend with a 4-day total of $12.3 million. Completing the top five are two Sony films, “A Dog’s Way Home” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” both of which are expected to finish the weekend with a $10-11 million total. “A Dog’s Way Home” is estimated to push its cume to $24.8 million after two weekends, while “Spider-Verse” will see its cume reach $161 million after six weekends.

Outside the top five, Funimation released the shounen anime film “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” on 470 screens, and is projected to make $9.4 million over four days. Meanwhile, Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” will cross $200 million domestic after 12 weekends in theaters, adding $2.7 million this weekend from 1,177 screens.

Frank Grillo to Star in the Thriller ‘Hell on the Border’
Frank Grillo is set to star in the action-thriller “Hell on the Border” with Wes Miller directing.

Miller also penned the script with Curtis Nichouls, Henry Penzi, and Sasha Yelaun producing. Ron Perlman is also on board to co-star.

Plot details are unknown at this time. Production is currently underway in Birmingham, Ala.

Grillo has a slew of projects set to bow in 2019, starting with the thriller “Donnybrook,” which also stars Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley and opened at the Toronto Film Festival. It premieres in theaters on Feb. 15.

He will follow that up with the thriller “Boss Level” opposite Mel Gibson and Naomi Watts, which Grillo produced with his production company War Party.

M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” cracked $3.7 million at 3,200 North American sites on Thursday night.

Universal’s “Glass” brings together the narratives of Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable,” which was released in 2000, and 2016’s “Split.” The supernatural thriller unites stars Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, and Sarah Paulson. The film is set to open in 3,841 locations on Friday, with the studio anticipating a $50 million launch over the first four days.

“Glass” is expected to deliver the second-largest debut for January and for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, behind only “American Sniper,” which grossed $89.2 million over the three-day weekend and $107.2 million during Friday-Monday in 2015. “Glass” could surpass “Ride Along” as the second-best bow during the four-day frame. Kevin Hart to Star in Paul Weitz’s ‘Fatherhood’
Kevin Hart is ready to show off his serious side.

The comedian will star in Sony Pictures’ “Fatherhood,” a big-screen adaptation of the Matt Logelin bestseller “Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss & Love.” The film, which centers on a widower who must raise his daughter after his wife dies in childbirth, is directed by Paul Weitz (“About a Boy”).

Hart just scored a box office hit with “The Upside,” another change-of-pace role. Its success came despite controversy surrounding Hart’s selection as Oscar host. He abandoned the emcee gig amid blowback over homophobic jokes he made earlier in his career. Hart had been alternately apologetic and defiant while promoting “The Upside,” a stance that further inflamed the controversy.

Hart will shoot “Fatherhood” after he wraps up the sequel to “Jumanji.” His other movies include “Night School,” “Get Hard,” and “Central Intelligence.”

This week’s online release of a teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home was an off-the-wall sensation for Sony’s Columbia Pictures racking up 130 million views in its first 24 frenetic hours.

The massive response made Tuesday’s trailer debut the biggest digital launch in the history of Sony Pictures, topping the mark set by Spider-Man: Homecoming (116 million views in 24 hours). That July 2017 release went on to gross $334.2 million domestically and $880.1 million worldwide.

The new trailer arrived at a moment when interest in Spider-Man is on the upswing thanks to the critical and commercial success of Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the landmark animated epic that appears poised for a major trophy run after its Golden Globes win.

Curiosity in the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer was stoked even more by the cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War, the Disney/Marvel Studios hit that finished 2018 as the year’s top-grossing global release.

Nick Redman, Documentary Filmmaker and Soundtrack Producer, Dies at 63
Nick Redman, Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker, award-winning soundtrack producer and co-founder of the Twilight Time video label, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 17, at a Santa Monica Hospital, after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 63.

He was nominated for an Academy Award as producer of the 1996 documentary “The Wild Bunch: An Album in Montage,” a look back at Sam Peckinpah’s controversial film. He also produced and directed the 1998 “A Turning of the Earth: John Ford, John Wayne and The Searchers,” about the making of the Western classic, a prizewinner at multiple film festivals.

In 2007 he produced and directed the feature documentary “Becoming John Ford,” which debuted at the Venice International Film Festival and detailed the long and complex relationship between the famous director and 20th Century-Fox studio chief Darryl F. Zanuck.

He made numerous other short films including profiles of actress Stella Stevens and film composers Basil Poledouris and Jerry Fielding.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired all international rights to “The Tomorrow Man,” a romantic drama with John Lithgow and Blythe Danner, Variety has learned.

The deal is in advance of the film’s world premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at the Sundance Film Festival. It does not include North American rights. Those went to Bleecker Street, which announced the acquisition earlier this week. A spokesperson for Sony declined to comment.

The Tomorrow Man” marks the debut feature of Noble Jones, an up-and-coming filmmaker who also wrote the script. The film centers on Ed Hemsler (Lithgow), a man obsessed with preparing himself for a disaster that never comes, and Ronnie Meisner (Danner), a shopaholic who buys lots of junk she may never use. Together they end up forming an unlikely romantic pair.

As you’ve surely noticed by now, Netflix boasts an ever-expanding library of original movies and TV series. “Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened,” “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” and “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” are just some of the conversation starters to premiere on the streaming giant in recent weeks, and they have something in common: They all cost money to acquire and/or produce. Sundance 2018 Box Office Recap: Winners and Losers

While the independent specialty market is in decline, Sundance’s strong release track record continued last year. Sixteen movies that world premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival grossed over $2 million in domestic box office, the best performance in recent years.

These films (plus three Spotlight selections that premiered at other festivals) didn’t set a record for total performance. The 2017 edition total of $270 million included “Get Out,” which contributed close to $180 million, double the rest of the Sundance field. For 2018, the total for all releases is just under $200 million. That’s 70 percent ahead of 2016 from all premiered films.

It took a decade before he started getting regular work, helped by Mike Leigh casting him in Vera Drake (2004) and as a volatile driving instructor in Happy-Go-Lucky (2008). ‘Glass’ to Rank in Top 3 Mlk Debuts With $48 Million
M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” is on its way to a solid debut with an estimated $48 million for the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.

A sequel to 2000’s “Unbreakable” and 2017’s “Split,” the Universal superhero thriller should bring in around $41 million from 3,841 domestic locations over the Friday through Sunday period. The estimates are slightly below earlier analyst forecasts, which had placed it in the $50 million or above range. It earned $16 million on Friday, including $3.7 million from Thursday previews.

Despite the possibly lower than anticipated debut, “Glass” could still become one of the highest-ever releases for Mlk weekend. The record is held by 2015’s “American Sniper,” which took in $107.2 million in its debut. Kevin Hart and Ice Cube’s “Ride Along” currently stands in second place with $48.6 million in 2014.
